How Furnace Atmosphere Affects SiC Heating Element Life

Furnace atmosphere is one of the key factors that affects silicon carbide heating element service life. For overseas furnace builders and kiln operators, the atmosphere should be reviewed together with element temperature, surface loading, resistance matching and installation spacing.

Why atmosphere matters

SiC heating elements can work up to 1600℃ in clean dry air. In other gases, the service temperature may be limited because the protective surface condition and the element material reaction can change. This is why an RFQ should always include furnace atmosphere, not only furnace temperature.

Furnace atmosphere is one of the strongest service-life factors for SiC heating elements. The table below summarizes common operating guidance for typical atmospheres.
